In 1878, during a time of spiritual awakening across rural America, the Reverend F. M. Mosher began holding small prayer meetings in private homes throughout Cattaraugus County. These intimate gatherings created a foundation of faith and fellowship that would endure for generations. As interest grew and attendance increased, the congregation soon outgrew these modest settings. With resourcefulness characteristic of frontier communities, they rented space in a local wagon shop, establishing their first formal meeting place. This fledgling faith community, filled with hope and purpose, became known as "The Tabernacle."
The Wesleyan Methodist Church was officially formed with seven dedicated charter members who shared a vision for bringing methodist teachings to the region. Their commitment bore fruit quickly, and by October 1880, the growing congregation had raised sufficient funds to purchase property where they constructed their first permanent church building. This simple structure became a beacon of hope and community gathering place for the rural population.
In 1901, in a significant development that strengthened the church's presence in the region, a congregation from nearby New Albion merged with East Leon, bringing together two communities of believers under one spiritual roof. This union expanded both the church's membership and its influence throughout the surrounding countryside.
The post-World War II era brought renewed spiritual vigor to East Leon. During the 1950s, the church experienced a significant period of revival and growth that necessitated physical expansion of their facilities. The congregation worked together to add Sunday School classrooms and fellowship spaces to accommodate their growing ministry, particularly focused on educating the next generation of believers.
As East Leon's influence grew, the congregation felt called to extend their ministry beyond their own walls. In a testament to their missionary spirit, they became instrumental in establishing the Little Valley Wesleyan Church, planting seeds of faith that would grow into another thriving spiritual community.
For nearly 150 years, East Leon Wesleyan Church has remained steadfast in its mission, following the teachings of Jesus Christ through changing times. The dedication of countless faithful men and women who have served God's kingdom through this church has created a legacy of faith, service, and community that continues to this day. Their story is a testament to the enduring power of faith expressed through generations of committed believers in rural America.
